Gurren Lagann

Humanity lives beneath the ground in enormous caves, largely unaware that a world of open sky and stars exists above. In the underground village of Jiha, shy young digger Simon discovers a strange glowing object while excavating. He befriends the fiercely ambitious Kamina, who dreams of breaking through the village ceiling and reaching the surface despite the elder's refusal to tolerate the idea.

Their plans become urgent when danger from above crashes into Jiha. Joined by the heavily armed Yoko and a small but resilient robot called Lagann, Simon and Kamina help defend the village and finally reach the surface. What they find is no peaceful new world: humanity faces a harsh battlefield dominated by rampaging Beastmen. The newly formed companions set out to fight back and change the balance of that conflict.
