Rachel is a freelancer for the Daily Days information center and the daughter of a railroad engineer who was ruined after being blamed for a terrible train accident. She loves trains but resents the industry, so she rides them frequently without paying. In 1931, she boards the Flying Pussyfoot as a stowaway.

She initially observes the chaos before helping several passengers escape.
After reporting what she witnessed, Rachel learns that the Rail Tracer is Claire Stanfield, also known as Vino. Her search for an explanation later brings her to Czeslaw and Ennis, and Czeslaw tells her about the Immortals.
