Melos is a naïve young shepherd with a sense of fairness.
Story spoilers
He lives under the tyrant King Dionys, whose killings enrage him. Melos enters the castle with a knife intending to assassinate the king, but is caught and arrested. He asks for three days before his execution to attend his younger sister's wedding; the king agrees on the condition that Melos's friend Selinuntius remain as a hostage and be executed in his place if Melos does not return.
