Houtarou Oreki prefers to conserve his energy, but his quiet high school life changes when he joins the Classic Literature Club at his sister's request. The club soon presents him with a mystery buried in its own past: an unresolved question surrounding events from 45 years earlier.

Oreki investigates alongside the endlessly curious Eru Chitanda, knowledgeable Satoshi Fukube, and stern but well-meaning Mayaka Ibara. Solving the club's history requires him to work around missing information and deadlines while drawing on an aptitude for deduction he would rather not exert. Beyond that central case, ordinary school life repeatedly produces smaller mysteries involving family history, student projects, stories, and other seemingly mundane details.
