Kazuya Kujou is a Japanese student attending Saint Marguerite Academy in the European country of Sauville. His appearance makes him an outsider among his classmates, who nickname him the “Black Reaper” after a local legend. While searching the school's elaborate library for ghost stories, Kujou follows a strand of golden hair to a garden where he meets Victorique de Blois, a doll-like girl with remarkable powers of deduction and foresight. Their meeting draws them into a growing succession of mysteries, including stories of a ghost ship and an alchemist, forcing the pair to rely on one another's very different strengths.
