Yuzuru Otonashi

Hypnosis restores Otonashi's memories of his sick younger sister, whose death inspired him to study medicine. He later survives a train crash long enough to help other trapped survivors and signs an organ-donor form before dying shortly before rescue arrives. Otonashi eventually confesses his love to Kanade, learns that she received his donated heart, and watches her disappear. The ending later shows figures resembling Otonashi and Kanade on a city street, with the Otonashi-like figure reaching toward the other's shoulder, while the alternate epilogue instead depicts him remaining behind as student president.
