Story spoilers
Masanosuke eventually investigates Yaichi's repressed past. Yaichi was born Seinoshin and adopted into a prominent family that later rejected him. After being kidnapped and falsely told that a trusted servant named Yaichi had betrayed him, he grows into the bandit “Sei”; he is implied to have killed that servant before later fleeing to Edo, taking the name Ichi, and forming the Five Leaves with Otake. He eventually learns that the original Yaichi never betrayed him.
