The Laughing Man is an extraordinarily capable hacker able to seize multiple video streams, take control of cybernetic brains, and erase his own image from cybernetic vision in real time. His emblem is a smiling figure in a cap surrounded by a quotation from The Catcher in the Rye.
Story spoilers
Aoi is responsible for the initial incident that makes the Laughing Man a phenomenon, but is not its true originator. He confronts Serano after finding a file and never discovers where it came from. Whoever left the file may have been the "real" Laughing Man, but may also have received it from someone else.
