Tatsuya Shima is Akio Asakura's principal rival, an exceptionally skilled driver who races a black 1987 Porsche 911 Yellowbird known as the Blackbird. Outside racing, he is a highly skilled surgeon and uses his income to support his racing. He respects the limits of his car rather than risking disaster for a win.

Frustrated by repeated losses to Akio, Tatsuya has Kitami Jun tune the Porsche with a second turbo and additional power so it can better challenge the Devil Z.
