Story spoilers
Only Tarou was rescued alive from the kidnapping; his sister Mizuka died. He later develops unusual abilities during astral projection, including a dog-like spirit form. Tarou eventually believes Miyako may be Mizuka's reincarnation, then learns that his sister's spirit has actually been living within him and that his feelings for Miyako are genuinely his own.
