Story spoilers
Soujirou's smiling demeanor developed as a defense against severe childhood abuse. At eight, after Shishio teaches him that only the strong survive and gives him a sword, Soujirou kills the family members who try to murder him. His later swordsmanship earns him the name “Heaven's Sword,” and his extraordinary shukuchi speed and Battoujutsu culminate in the technique Shuntensatsu.
