Story spoilers
In Mega Man X4's Zero story, Sigma's turn Maverick is tied to his first encounter and fight with Zero. Zero gives Sigma his facial scars, Sigma barely gains the upper hand, and it seems that this fight is when Sigma is first infected by the virus then known as the Zero Virus. The Day of Sigma OVA changes the scar detail: in that version, X gives Sigma the facial scars during their first fight.
