Shinobu Maehara begins the story as a very shy 12-year-old seventh grader and a gifted cook. In the anime, her parents are divorcing and she would rather remain at the Hinata apartments than leave town with one of them. Her shyness initially keeps her distant from classmates, though she is pleased when the Hinata residents praise her cooking.
Story spoilers
Shinobu gradually becomes more confident and develops a crush on Keitarō after he helps her study. She feels betrayed when she learns he had misled her about being a Tokyo University student, but the residents later help the two make amends around her birthday.
