Story spoilers
Gentatsu was killed by the Hitokiri Battousai, though Shigure initially does not know this. Burdened by the loss, Shigure secretly gathers surviving Aizu fighters with Kajiki for a new restoration against the Meiji government. After recognizing Kenshin's swordsmanship and learning that he killed Gentatsu, Shigure clashes with him before ultimately breaking down emotionally when Toki begs him to stop fighting. He then shields Toki from imperial police gunfire and dies from the wounds while trying to apologize to her.
