Story spoilers
Rosalie's biological mother is the Duchess de Polignac, Martine Gabrielle. Nicole reveals the truth while dying after being struck by a carriage, sending Rosalie on a quest for revenge. After mistakenly targeting Lady Jarjayes, she is stopped by Oscar, who subsequently teaches her fencing, manners, history, and courtly skills. Rosalie eventually comes to admire and love Oscar deeply.
