Rika Akiba is a seventeen-year-old girl who has spent much of her life hospitalized because of a weak heart valve. With few opportunities to make friends, she spends her days reading books by her favorite author, Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, and has a close relationship with her doctor, Natsume.
Story spoilers
Rika inherited her condition from her father, who died during an operation. Nurse Akiko later persuades fellow patient Yūichi to keep Rika company, and Natsume grows unhappy with the relationship that develops between them.
