Story spoilers
Motoko's behavior deteriorates after her father-in-law Iwao becomes a Shiki and kills her husband, daughter and mother-in-law, followed by the murder of her remaining son. She later joins the Shiki extermination and exposes that her friend Kanami is hiding her transformed mother Tae, contributing to Tae's death and Kanami's departure. Obsessed with avenging her children, Motoko searches for Iwao even though he is strongly implied to have already been killed. By the end, she sets fire to both the village and herself.
