Megumi Yamamoto is the daughter of a famous violinist who rarely speaks because she wants to preserve her voice for singing. Instead, she normally communicates by writing in a notepad or sketchbook.
Story spoilers
Megumi initially pretends to like Yahiro to protect Akira's relationship, but eventually develops real feelings for him and sings for him. Their romantic outcome differs between versions: the anime has them date and remain together, while the manga has Yahiro reject her confession before later asking her out in the final chapter. In the manga, Yahiro's encouragement also helps Megumi obtain a singing contract.
