Maria Takayama is a 10-year-old academic prodigy presented as a nun and the supervising teacher and moderator of the Neighbor's Club. Despite her exceptional education, she can be rude when annoyed and is gullible and notably childish, often calling others "Rotten mandarin." She develops a sibling-like relationship with Kodaka and apparently has increasing difficulty making friends as she skips grades.
Story spoilers
Volume 8 reveals that Maria had never actually been a nun or teacher. Sena intervenes by contacting her father, who appoints Maria as a special part-time teacher and prevents the club from being disbanded.
