Lydia Carlton is Professor Carlton's 17-year-old daughter and a fairy doctor who inherited from her mother the rare ability to see fairies. Independent and kind, she willingly helps others and hopes to become a fully fledged fairy doctor, even when doing so places her in danger.

She later works as Edgar's consultant on fairy matters after helping him recover the Merrow's Sword. Lydia is eventually treated as Edgar's fiancée after accepting a moonstone ring that effectively signifies acceptance of his proposal, although she vehemently denies that status. The ring also shows protective magical properties, helping keep her soul from being trapped in the fairy world in volume 6 of the novel series and allowing her to break Kelpie's spell.
