Ludwig Hewitt is the second son of a merchant family and a bright young man who once dreamed of becoming a government official. His studies expose him to deep corruption in the Tearmoon Empire, leaving him contemptuous of the nobility and imperial family. He is also a disciple of the Wandering Sage.
Story spoilers
In the previous timeline, Ludwig works as a tax official, tries to rebuild the empire during its financial crisis, and eventually campaigns for Mia's release from prison after changing his view of her. In the main timeline, Mia's apparent wisdom earns his loyalty. Much later, in Volume 4 of the light novel, he comes to understand Mia herself more clearly and renews that loyalty to her personally rather than to the image of "The Empire's Wisdom."
