Story spoilers
A wizard once saved Latifa but later cursed her after her father broke a marriage promise and tried to have him executed. The curse gradually removes the animus she needs to live, leaving her dependent on happiness generated by the park. It also causes her physical changes and memories to reset each August 1, trapping her in a repeating year at age fourteen.
