Story spoilers
Among his tools is an enchanted sword for slaying mononoke, but he must first determine a spirit's Katachi, Makoto, and Kotowari before drawing it. Unsheathing the sword transforms him into a demon-like being, and his pointed ears and canine teeth suggest that he is not entirely human. He later admits that his fear is reaching a place where no form, truth, or reason exists.
