He later comes under the protection of Fujiwara no Hidehira, defeats the warrior monk Benkei in a duel, and gains him as a loyal right-hand man. Yoshitsune eventually joins his brother Yoritomo during the Genpei War and becomes a major figure in the conflict with the Taira. Yoshitsune's father and two oldest brothers were killed during the Heiji Rebellion. He later kills his rival cousin Minamoto no Yoshinaka, helps defeat the Taira, and eventually turns against Yoritomo alongside Emperor Go-Shirakawa. Betrayed and defeated at the Battle of Koromo River, Yoshitsune is forced to commit seppuku along with his wife and daughter; Benkei also dies with him.
