Story spoilers
Kurama is actually the ancient Fox Demon Youko Kurama, once a feared thief in Makai. After being wounded, his spirit entered an unborn human child, intending to regain strength and eventually return to Makai. His human mother's selflessness changed that plan, leading him to continue living as her son. His demonic form gives greater control over Demon Realm plants and greater power than his regular form.
