Story spoilers
Kouichi's interest in death comes from his inability to die. During the Edo period, a previous Shinra Banshō holder experimented with placing its wisdom into animals, and Kouichi was one of only two survivors who became immortal. His ultimate wish is to find a way to die and ensure that beings like himself are never created again.
