Story spoilers
During the Hangman Game, Mekama supports Sadakuni Ikki through advice and belittling Madarame Baku. Yakou Hikoichi confronts Mekama over possible bias, and Mekama responds by challenging Yakou to a ranking battle. Mekama loses and subsequently dies under the battle's rules; the death is carried out through hanging using the frame meant for Madarame. While being hung, Mekama sees Sadakuni abandon his conviction, making everything Mekama worked for feel pointless.
