Kaiji Itou is poor and in debt, living alone in a slum while repeatedly losing at small gambling games. At the start of the story, a co-signed loan leaves him carrying a debt of 3,850,000 yen. When the stakes become life-threatening, however, he reveals an exceptional instinct for gambling.

After his first experience aboard the Espoir, Kaiji rapidly develops from a naïve man into a much more thoughtful and calculating gambler.
