Biography
Joseph Carpenter, known as Joker, is Yomiko's boss and the acting head of the Special Operations Division in the Read or Die OVA. He is cool-headed and skilled with words.
Story spoilers
In the novels, Joker seeks control of the Division and the country under Gentleman, later turning his thoughts toward destroying him. In R.O.D -THE TV-, he takes control of the British Library Special Operations Unit after Gentleman's death and pursues a scheme to regain world control regardless of human cost. By the end of the TV series, he is recovering from a coma after absorbing Gentleman's information during Operation Sleeping Books.
