Story spoilers
His professed "love" is a lie: he tricks Ann into making a sugar sculpture, steals it and her carriage, and tries to submit the sculpture as his own at the annual Sugar Sculpture Festival. Ann still reaches the festival, and because the judges cannot determine the sculpture's true maker, neither of them wins.
