Hazel Grosse is a church-dressed traveler from the rich Western continent who comes to Shangri-la with his bodyguard Gat. Following the man who was both father and master to him, he exterminates youkai and carries persistent revenge and hatred after his master's death. Hazel can replace souls, using souls from defeated youkai to revive humans who died from youkai-inflicted wounds, though when and where he gained this ability is unknown.
Story spoilers
The Reloaded Gunlock anime gives Hazel a different origin. After repeatedly killing youkai, he is punished by being turned into one himself and then kills the priest who raised him. Gato later kills Hazel under the Great Spirit's orders but revives him by sharing his own life energy. Hazel's memories are altered, and he later tries to kill and revive Sanzo. After Gato reveals the truth, Hazel regains his memories. The Sanzo party defeats him in his youkai form; Hazel asks Sanzo to kill him, and Sanzo complies.
