Hal is introduced as Android Q01, asked to replace Hal after a plane accident and help Kurumi recover.
Story spoilers
Later, it is revealed that Kurumi was the one who died in the crash and that Hal convinced himself he was a robot to escape the pain. Q01 was assigned to help him by taking Kurumi's form.
