Hadlar
ハドラーHadler / Demon Lord / Evil King
Biography
Hadlar is the commander of the demon army and a former Demon Lord who was once slain by Avan and his companions. An unnamed, even more powerful demon lord revives him and makes him commander of that demon lord's troops. Hadlar initially wants to settle the score with Avan, but after a first battle in which the still-novice Dai badly wounds him, his attention shifts toward Dai. Vearn grants Hadlar the power to return in a stronger body whenever he “dies,” a power Hadlar cannot control and that binds him to Vearn's service. His fear and hatred of Dai eventually give way to respect for Dai as a worthy rival.

Hadlar later gives up immortality for a major increase in strength and becomes a hyperdemon. Using chess pieces given by Vearn, he creates “offsprings” carrying traits of his current and former selves. He stakes everything on a final duel with Dai and, after being defeated, dies without regret. Hym, the only surviving chess piece, becomes his successor.
