Character profile
Gram River
Biography
Gram River lives aboard the City-Ship of Adena at the start of the story. Athletic and capable in a fight, he is nevertheless laid-back and peace-loving, preferring cooking and honest work. His varied jobs have also made him a competent pilot and hand-to-hand fighter, and he tends to be reckless and optimistic.
Story spoilers
Gram was apparently abandoned or orphaned as an infant, with clues suggesting his parents were royalty among Mars's aboriginal people. A necklace called the Mark of the Chief leads him into possession of a rare Round Buckler and eventually aboard the Ship of Aurora, where he becomes part of the crew and serves as cook. He later discovers the meaning of the Mark, finds the Stone of the Gods, helps save the Aurora crew from execution, and ultimately boards a recovered vessel he names the Ship of Hope with Vestemona and two children from Adena, intending to live there.
