Story spoilers
One of Rocky's photos shows Shin in the background, and Ryoko sees it in a magazine article on Asran, convincing her that Shin is alive. His fate differs by version: in the OVA, he dies after joining a pilot on patrol and being shot down. In the 2004 TV series, he survives and eventually reveals that Satoru Kanzaki was his sponsor; the assignment involved obtaining a photo of Shin's corpse as proof to Ryoko that Shin had died in action, and Rocky later helps thwart the marriage. In the Eclipse comic, he survives being shot down but is severely injured.
