Golem is an ancient automaton charged with protecting the forest. He encounters Somali while patrolling, and although he displays no emotion, he instinctively shields her from danger and assumes a father-like role that leads Somali to call him "Dad."
Story spoilers
Golems have a lifespan of one thousand years, and this Golem is nearing that limit. He therefore feels responsible for delivering Somali to other humans before his life ends.
