Gengai Hiraga
平賀源外Biography
Gengai Hiraga is regarded as Edo's greatest mechanic and inventor, a creator of crude-looking machines who has repeatedly helped Gintoki and the Yorozuya. His habit of modifying whatever is at hand without explaining how to use it often causes trouble for the eventual user.

He later runs Machine Hall, a repair shop and inventor's office, and frequently fixes Gintoki's scooter. Gengai's only son, Saburou, died in the Joui wars. Grief leaves Gengai vulnerable to Takasugi's manipulation, leading him to take part in an attack on a festival the Shogun was to attend before the Yorozuya and Shinsengumi stop the plan. Gengai is subsequently persuaded that revenge against the Bakufu is not the answer and remains a fugitive from the law.
