Story spoilers
Gauma is more than 5,000 years old and was once one of the Kaiju Eugenicists, a group whose Kaiju-control abilities brought prosperity to a country and earned them the name "dragon controllers" elsewhere. When the group was betrayed while also betraying the country, Gauma sided with the princess he loved and killed his former comrades. He then seemingly died, receiving the scars on his face in the process. He received Dynazenon from the princess in the form of a dragon ornament, either before or after his apparent death. The princess placed his mummified remains with other relics before taking her own life in hopes of joining him in the afterlife.
