Story spoilers
Fujitaka met Nadeshiko while teaching at her high school, and they later married. Nadeshiko died seven years before the story begins. In the manga, Fujitaka is eventually revealed as one half of Clow Reed's reincarnated soul; Eriol later gives him half of his magic, allowing Fujitaka to see Nadeshiko's spirit. The anime removes this reincarnation and magical development.
