Biography
Fang Yuan, courtesy name Xianmou, is the first member of the Eight Enigma, military advisers selected by strategist Sima Hui from among his students. A prominent member of the Yuan clan, Fang Yuan serves as first adviser to clan leader Yuan Shao, described before the later revelation as Fang Yuan's uncle, and seeks to expand the clan's territory in the north. His diminution tactics eliminate the Guandong Alliance and Gongsun Zan, strengthening the Yuan position there.

At 22, Fang Yuan learns that Yuan Shao is actually Fang Yuan's biological father and that Fang Yuan is Yuan Shao's illegitimate son. Yuan Shao regards Fang Yuan as the true heir and works to strengthen that position. Over time, Fang Yuan begins to accept Yuan Shao's plans and develops ambitions to take over the clan and overthrow Imperial Han. Fang Yuan's fatal assault on fellow Enigmas Xun Yu and Guo Jia fails to kill them but marks the dissolution of the Eight Enigmas and leads Shujing to retire.
