Story spoilers
He is actually Scythian and was adopted by Hieronymus after his birth family was massacred in a Greek slave raid. Later events expose his heritage, reduce him to slavery, and lead to a shipwreck near Boa in Paphlagonia, where he spends the rest of his childhood teaching the villagers Greek ways before a mercenary attack disrupts that life.
