Curtis Lawson is a genius engineer who helped create the time-travel gateway connecting 1999 and 2999 and designed the TA-series starships used by the pilots.
Story spoilers
Lawson's decision to travel a thousand years into the past is eventually traced to his discovery of the Yamamoto Yohko novels. Inspired by their premise, he builds the gateway and is astonished when the first person he meets in 1999 is Youko herself, whom he had assumed was fictional.
