Story spoilers
Clow is already dead before the story begins. Knowing his death was approaching, he chose his unborn descendant Sakura Kinomoto to inherit the cards and guardians, using his foresight to prepare circumstances that would help her succeed. He also divided his soul into reincarnations: in the manga, Eriol Hiiragizawa and Fujitaka Kinomoto, while the anime uses only one reincarnation.
