Benio Hanamura

Benio Hanamura is a 17-year-old schoolgirl living in Tokyo during the Taishō era. Raised by her army-officer father after losing her mother young, she grows into an unconventional tomboy who studies kendo, favors Western fashions, loves literature, and rejects the expectation that women should center their lives on domestic duties. Benio opposes arranged marriage and believes women should be able to pursue careers and marry for love.
