Anji Yuukyuuzan
悠久山安慈Myouo / Anji the Destroyer / Bright King
Biography
Anji Yuukyuuzan is a fallen warrior-monk who joins Shishio against the Meiji government. Though still guided by many Buddhist beliefs, he is willing to ally with evil in pursuit of what he sees as salvation. Known as the Bright King, he fights mainly with his fists using Futae no Kiwami.
Story spoilers
Anji's hostility toward the Meiji government stems from the anti-Buddhist purge that destroyed his home and killed five orphaned children under his care. He teaches Futae no Kiwami to Sanosuke without knowing that Sanosuke is allied with Kenshin. Sanosuke later defeats him with an improved version of the technique. After Shishio's death, Anji chooses to serve a twenty-five-year prison sentence in Hokkaido.
