AL is the artificial-intelligence support system originally installed in the ARX-7 Arbalest. Permanently locked to Sousuke after their first operation together, AL begins as a conventional Arm Slave operating system.
Story spoilers
AL gradually develops a personality, expanding its vocabulary and social understanding through radio broadcasts and increasingly joking with or criticizing Sousuke. In the two End of Day by Day novels, after serious friction between pilot and AI, Sousuke and AL eventually develop mutual respect and operate the Lambda Driver more effectively than before. In A Dancing Very Merry Christmas and Continuing On My Own, AL develops autonomous combat abilities. Following the final battle in Continuing On My Own, AL survives the Arbalest's destruction and, in Burning One Man Force, helps design the ARX-8 Laevatein around Sousuke's combat style.
