Biography

Ai Enma is a spiritual being who lives with her grandmother in a realm of eternal twilight and carries out vengeance on behalf of clients. Initially expressionless, she wears a black sailor uniform in ordinary circumstances and a floral kimono when delivering vengeance.

Story spoilers

Ai becomes the Hell Girl after villagers condemn her to a sacrificial death and she retaliates by burning their village. Carrying out other people's vengeance and ferrying people to Hell becomes her punishment for centuries. Later revelations show that the Spider ordered her to close her heart. Her experiences with the Shibatas seem to reawaken her ability to express emotion. When enraged, she can unleash powerful energy, create elaborate illusions and teleport.
