Story spoilers
Ace's apparent wanderings are eventually exposed as missions to assassinate targets selected by the Joker or the Clockmaker. He assists Julius Monrey by retrieving clocks belonging to the dead and kills anyone who obstructs him. Ace is among the first to say he has no romantic interest in Alice, although his feelings change soon afterward. Even after confessing that he loves her, Alice points out that he used her as a shield when Peter threatened to shoot him. Ace later comes close to killing Alice because she is changing everyone in Wonderland, but decides against it after realizing her death would prevent him from hearing her heartbeat again.
