Takaki Tohno and Akari Shinohara are close friends and classmates until Akari's family moves to another part of Japan. They try to preserve their connection through letters, but another move approaches when Takaki learns that his own family will also relocate. Before that happens, he decides to meet Akari once more. As the years continue, the two follow separate paths and their contact gradually fades, even though memories of their time together remain important to both of them. The film follows the emotional distance that develops between people who still remember one another even as time and geography steadily pull their lives apart.
